I know it's been over a month since my last post. Sorry...
I hope everyone has had a good Christmas and New Year. Maybe one of my resolutions should be to post more regularly on my blog. We'll see how well I do this year.
As for the title of this post. I recently (as in about 3 weeks ago) went canoeing across Shoals Creek in Florence to hike to a waterfall with my boyfriend, Alan. After the initial shock of the hike I was on, it was really fun!
It being my first time in a canoe, I really didn't know what I was doing. Luckily, Alan was in the back and did most of the paddling. If it had been me in the back, we would have just gone around in circles the entire time. That, or taken all day to cross the lake/creek.
Once we were on the other side, Alan says "We're gonna hike up this hill and across to the waterfall." Little did I know that we were actually hiking up the side of a mountain! I may be exaggerating here, but when you have to crane your neck to see the top of the "hill" and your feet are sliding so much that you slide down about ten feet for every two feet you climb, it's a mountain to me! Once, I was sliding down the "hill" so much that I had to grab a tree to keep me from sliding right into the creek. I should have worn my metal spiked softball cleats for this hike!
Anyway, after what seemed like forever, Alan and I made it up to a little ridge where we could walk across the hill to the waterfall.
It was beautiful!!! Anna and Kristen, it wasn't as spectacular as Niagara Falls, but it was very scenic. We were able to walk behind the waterfall and take some pictures. Now, I know that it's in the middle of winter and there are no leaves on the trees. So just imagine what it might look like in the Spring.
Maybe Alan and I will go back there clad in our metal cleats in the Spring and take more pictures.
I included the above picture with me sitting just to let each of you see how steep this hill was... It was pretty hilarious, I'm sure, for Alan to watch me scrambling to get up to the waterfall. We laugh about it now.

Those are great pictures! Canoes make me nervous but I do love hiking & being outside. :-)
Wow! You went canoeing, AND there is a place to canoe in AL??? Colour me surprised (and proud)! :)
It's nice to "meet" Alan. The canoe/hiking trip sounds like a fun little outing together.

From me: Glad you finally posted again. Sounds like a cool hike - Brian and I would like to join you in the spring if you go again! Hmm, I guess the hike may not be safe for a big ol' preggo girl, huh? We'll see...

Well, Sara. I've got some extra metal spiked cleats for you to wear. But I don't think you and the "little one" will fair very well on this hike. Maybe Alan and Brian can carry you up to the waterfall... It's worth it to get to stand behind it.
